With the airing of the season seven finale of Game of Thrones a few weeks ago, HBO saw record-breaking viewership numbers. Having already become the most-watched show ever in the history of broadcasting, the Game of Thrones finale saw 12.1 million people tune in for the live broadcast in the U.S. and just under 4.5 million viewing it via streaming services. All 16.6 million were likely on the edge of their seat throughout.

ESPN, Live Sports, and How Subscriptions May Change the Game

It’s happened. More people in the U.S. are now using streaming video services than have a cable subscription. This is according to a May 2017 study from Fluent LLC, as reported in eMarketer. The survey found that 67% of U.S. internet users watch or have access to a streaming service, compared to just 61% who have cable TV.

What Bidwill is referring to is the NFL’s switch to digitally streaming games, with the Internet possibly becoming the exclusive means by which fans will consume pro football content. Of course, attending a live game will always be the preferred option for some. But for the millions of other fans who arrange their Sundays and Monday evenings around that week’s televised pro football matchups, changes are afoot. The reality is that the Internet and various streaming services (called Over the Top, or OTT) are where the NFL’s fans are—and Bidwill recognizes that. As many as ever are watching the games, but they’re doing so on tablets and mobile devices and, he says, “we want to respond to that.”
